How do I maintain proper pool water chemistry?

To balance pool water properly, follow these steps:

Adjust Alkalinity (80–120 ppm)
Raise with sodium bicarbonate; lower with muriatic or dry acid.
Adjust pH (7.4–7.6)
Raise with soda ash; lower with acid.
Balance Calcium Hardness (200–300 ppm)
Increase with calcium chloride; reduce by partially draining/refilling.
Sanitize (1–3 ppm chlorine)
Use tablets, liquid, powder, or a salt chlorine generator. Shock weekly/biweekly.
Check CYA Stabilizer (35–60 ppm; 60–80 ppm for saltwater)
Helps protect chlorine from sunlight.
Monitor Total Dissolved Solids (below 1,200–1,500 ppm)
Drain/refill if levels are too high.
Shock the Pool
Boosts free chlorine to eliminate contaminants.
Test Again
Ensure all levels return to proper ranges.

Most pool filter cartridges last 3–5 years, but lifespan depends on usage, water conditions, and cleaning habits.

Replace your cartridge when you notice:

Cleaning frequency doubling compared to normal
Cloudy water even with balanced chemistry
Visible rips, cracked end caps, or crushed pleats
Inability to reduce pressure after cleaning

Properly sized filters and consistent maintenance extend cartridge life significantly.
